Education support sought for new bills
As a Sunnyside High School graduate, I know how important an education is to my current well-being. Unfortunately, 263 million children and youth are out of school around the world.
Every year of schooling decreases chances youth will engage in violent conflict by 20 percent. If all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted, dropping global poverty to 12 percent.
That is why I am urging Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Sunnyside, to support Republican Rep. Dave Reichert, co-sponsor of the bipartisan, bicameral Global Partnership for Education House Resolution 466 and Senate Resolution 286.
The resolutions are dedicated exclusively to education in the world’s lowest income and most fragile countries. They ask recipient countries to commit 20 percent of their annual revenue to education, and asking donor countries, philanthropic and private sector organizations to pledge $3.1 billion over three years, from 2018-20.
The plan will support:
• An additional 19 million children completing primary school
• An additional 6.6 million children completing lower secondary education
• Training 1.7 million teachers
• Building 23,800 classrooms
• Distributing 204 million textbooks
I hope we can count on Rep. Newhouse to show leadership on global education
