Spartans win opener

— The Spartans opened the boys basketball season with a 75-63 win against White Swan on Tuesday.

“It was close,” Spartans coach David Morse said of the first three quarters.

Granger had a 5-point lead, 49-44, at the end of the third quarter.

The Cougars, however, quickly ran out of steam and the Spartans outscored them, 24-29, in the final stanza.

“We had a lot of balanced throwing,” Morse said.

The Spartans also switched from man to zone defense, he said.

“Conditioning helped us pull away at the end,” Morse said.

The leading scorer for the Spartans was Trevor Smith with 21 points. From the free throw line, he hit three of his four shots.

Andre Castro tallied 16 points. He hit a trey and was 1-for-2 from the charity stripe.

Also hitting double digits was David Soliz with 14 points. He also sunk a 3-pointer and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

Joseph Soliz added 10 points to the tally and was 4-for-6 from the stripe; Jake Stewart hit three 2-point baskets and was 2-for-2 from the free throw line; Keanu Cantu delivered on two of his five free throws and scored a basket from inside the paint; and Jose Alvarez scored 4 points.

“It was fun to watch,” Morse said.
