GRANGER The Spartans girls basketball team delivered for the home crowd, securing a 52-41 season-opening win against White Swan on Tuesday.
The Spartans took an early lead, holding the Cougars to just 4 points. Granger tallied 11 in the first quarter.
The Cougars weren’t quite as unfortunate in the second through fourth stanzas, although they were unable to catch up to their host.
Granger outscored them 15-14 in the second quarter, 13-11 in the third and 13-12 in the final stanza.
Scoring a game high 25 points was Jayleen Vasquez. She shot four 3-point baskets and was 1-for-2 from the free throw line.
Lily Stewart also scored in double digits with 10 points. She had just one free throw opportunity, but missed the shot.
Naya Roettger score 7 points, sinking 2-of-3 free throws and a 3-point basket.
Sophie Blodgett tallied 5 points and was 1-for-2 from the charity stripe; Kaitlyn Roettger scored 3 points on her only shot from beyond the trey line; and Emma Stewart delivered on a lay-in for 2 points.
For the Cougars, the leading scorer was Kiana Castilleja, who scored 11 points. She had a trey and was 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
Ashley Anderson scored 9 points; Jessica Cheney tallied 8 points; Hailey Bass added 5 points; Amanda Carey scored 4 points; and Julia Ike and Shiala Wolfsberger each added 2 points to the final tally.
In addition to Castilleja, the Cougars had two other 3-point baskets — one each from Anderson and Cheney.
The Cougars were 8-for-9 from the charity stripe, while the Spartans were 4-for-8 as a team.
