ZILLAH The Sunnyside Christian volleyball team returns to the 1B state volleyball tournament at the Yakima Valley SunDome on Friday.
The Knights secured the district championship and No. 1 state seed Saturday after dispatching Yakama Tribal in the semi-final match and Klickitat in the title match in three sets each.
The final scores against the Eagles were 25-15, 25-16 and 25-13. Against the Vandals, the scores were 25-13, 25-16 and 25-21.
“We played well today,” Sunnyside Christian coach Stephanie Dalrymple said after the district tournament. “I was happy to see us play scrappy defense and aggressive at the net.”
The Knights struggled with their serves, Dalrymple noted. Those struggles resulted in several points being given away to both Yakama Tribal and Klickitat.
Aydan Harrington provided an impressive 54 assists to her teammates. She also served 6 aces and had 10 digs.
Emily Banks led at the net with 23 kills. She had 14 perfect passes, 12 digs and 4 aces.
Kristen Broesma added 19 digs, 16 kills and 4 blocks to the effort; Krista den Hoed had 11 perfect passes and 9 digs; and Annie den Hoed served 10 aces and delivered 10 perfect passes.
Sailor Liefke had 7 kills and 7 perfect passes; Madison Bosma had 4 kills and 5 digs; and Alyssa Martin had 6 digs.
“We are excited to be headed back to the state tournament,” Dalrymple.
The Knights were sixth in the 2015 1B state volleyball tournament.
