Chicago is an American musical that has enjoyed one of the longest runs on the Broadway stage. Written in 1975 by John Kander with lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Bob Fosse, Chicago is the tale of fame and fortune.
The musical is based on the 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins. The storyline includes actual criminals and crimes she reported on during her time as a journalist at the Chicago Tribune. It is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the “celebrity criminal.”
The original Broadway production opened in 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre in New York. It then opened in 1979 at the West End Theatre in London.
Chicago was revived on Broadway in 1996 and again a year later at the West End Theatre.
