Wounded Warriors fundraiser in the planning

Anthony Chavez did so well with his first Wounded Warriors fundraiser, the Sunnyside High School student has decided to make this year’s event his senior project.

Chavez said the second annual SHS students versus Armed Forces basketball game will be held Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Sunnyside High School gym.

Helping Chavez to organize the fundraiser is the SHS leadership class with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project.

“Last year, we collected more than $2,000 with our basketball game and raffles,” Chavez said.

“We hope to do even better this year,” he added.

Chavez said he found out about the Wounded Warrior Project last year and convinced local military recruiters, who routinely visit the high school, to aid the cause with a students versus recruiters basketball game fundraiser.

The funds from the Sunnyside event will again be donated to aid the veterans program, which provides therapy, counseling, equipment and support for returning veterans and their families.

Chavez invites others interested in supporting the Wounded Warrior Project to donate money toward the cause. He suggests those interested make out their Wounded Warriors donation checks to the high school’s “ASB Leadership” fund.

Admission to the Oct. 8 game will be $2 per person and $1 for children age 12 and under.
