High speed pursuit from Grandview to Sunnyside ends in two arrests

A routine traffic stop in Grandview late Tuesday night ended in two arrests and two damaged patrol cars following a high speed pursuit from East Wine Country Road in Grandview that ended in a residential area in north Sunnyside.

The driver, identified by police as 23-year-old Sunnyside resident Joel Ramos, eluded Grandview police, who in turn called for assistance from Sunnyside police at approximately 10:50 p.m., as the driver approached Sunnyside city limits on Yakima Valley Highway, according to Sunnyside Police Sgt. Scott Bailey.

Sunnyside officers attempted several times to use spike strips to stop the vehicle, which reached a maximum speed of 105 mph, said Bailey. 

A Sunnyside officer was finally able to deploy a spike strip and successfully spike one of the eluding vehicle’s tires. 

The pursuit lasted approximately 45 minutes within the city and ended when the vehicle was struck by a police vehicle executing a PIT maneuver. 

The chase took the evasive driver and law enforcement officers, all driving at high speeds, through residential areas of North Avenue, 16th Street, Edison Avenue, ending on Yakima Avenue.

No injuries were reported, but two police vehicles were damaged during the pursuit. 

The suspect was arrested on   charges of driving under the influence, attempted eluding of a police vehicle, vehicular assault and driving while license suspended. Police say Ramos had an outstanding arrest warrant. He was booked into the Grandview jail, according to Grandview Police Sgt. Kevin Glasenapp.

Glasenapp said a passenger in Ramos’ vehicle was also arrested on charges of obstructing a public officer and resisting arrest. He was also booked into the Grandview jail.

Agencies involved in the pursuit included the Grandview Police Department, Sunnyside Police Department, Washington State Patrol and Granger Police Department. The WSP has been requested to conduct an investigation of the collision.
