PREP TRACK & FIELD
CASHMERE – Lindsay Brown is going to be a force with which to be reckoned once the Class 1B postseason gets underway.
The Bickleton High School junior continued her mastery of the hurdles events at last Friday’s Rieke Track & Field Invitational, a 21-school invite staged in Cashmere.
Brown sped to a second-place showing in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, which drew a field of 20 hurdlers; and placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
In the shorter of the two races Brown clocked a time of 16.53, one of only three hurdlers to finish in under 17 seconds. The winner, Rose Walts of 1A Tonasket, hit the tape with a clocking of 16.06. Almira/Coulee junior Katie Emerson was third (16.70).
Brown, too, was one of just four runners to finish in under 49 seconds in the 300m hurdles from the 19-girl field. She placed fourth with a clocking of 48.94 seconds. Maddy Parton of 1A Cascade-Leavenworth won the race in a time of 47.90.
The Bickleton athlete grabbed her third ‘Top 5’ finish in the high jump. Brown placed fourth with a leap of 4-8. The winning jump was 5-0, set by Oroville senior Kaitlyn Grunst.
The only other Bickleton girl to score a ‘Top 5’ finish last Friday was sophomore Shaylee Tharp. Competing in the pole vault, Tharp placed third with a vault of 7-0. The two girls who bested her were Cashmere freshman Elli Kimes (10-2) and Quincy sophomore Elizabeth Nielson (9-0).
Team-wise, Bickleton’s girls placed 10th at the 21-school invite by totaling 27 points. The 2A Ephrata Tigers won the girls’ team title by tallying 83 points, with 2A Quincy a close second with 75 points.
Bickleton’s boys were one of four teams unable to put up any points on the scoreboard at the Cashmere meet. Ephrata claimed the boys’ team title with 120 points. Quincy was second with 83 points.
The top finish by a Bickleton athlete in the boys’ competitions was the ninth-place performance of junior Clint Strader in the pole vault. He cleared the bar at 10 feet-even. The winning vault was 13-6, set by Quincy senior Carter Bushman.
Bickleton also received a pair of 10th-place efforts from sophomores Troy Roberts and Andrew Gannon.
Roberts, in the 3200-meter race, put up a time of 10:51.28. Cascade-Leavenworth’s Daniel Olmstead won in a time of 10:14.37.
Gannon, competing in the 300-meter hurdles, placed 10th with a clocking of 47.47 seconds. Bridgeport senior Kip Craig won the race (41.51).
