An orange leopard, Big Bird’s wife, Bat Girl and numerous ladies dressed in orange and black were on the prowl yesterday at Sunnyside’s Black Rock Creek Golf Course.
With Halloween just around the bend, the Black Rock Creek 18-hole ladies group showed up Tuesday in proper attire for its end-of-the-summer luncheon and golf scramble.
The sports captain for the women’s group, Sunnyside’s Wanda Stokes, said the ladies enjoyed dressing up in costume for the final competition of the 2013 season.
“It was fun. Everyone enjoyed themselves,” Stokes said.
Besides closing out the year with a team scramble on the local links, Tuesday’s get-together featured the traditional awards luncheon.Of the four statistics tracked each week by Stokes this year, there was one recurring name…that of Sunnyside’s Carol Monholland. The talented golfer emerged at the top of two of the lists – most birdies and most chip-in birdies.
Monholland notched 10 tweeters in all in ladies golf play in 2013, five more birdies than the two runners-up, Stokes and Maryanne Currier of Prosser. Marilyn McGann of Prosser was fourth on the list with four birdies in all this season.
Most chip-in birdie honors also went to Monholland, as she knocked down four of them this year. Sunnyside’s Lynn Dessauralt was second on the list with two chip-in birdies.
The top five on the most chip-ins list, in order, were Prosser’s Rae Ann Goin and Sunnyside’s Lucille Rohman with five apiece, Stokes with four chip-in shots, and Monholland and Currier with three each.
The final statistic tracked during ladies play in 2013 was average number of putts needed to complete an 18-hole round. Carolyn Smith of Sunnyside proved to have the softest hands with the flat stick, averaging 31.33 putts each round. Monholland was a close second by averaging 31.40 putts each round. Rounding out the list of top eight putters this season were Sunnyside’s Connie Davis (31.75), Stokes (31.99), Goin (32.00), Rohman (32.22), Sunnyside’s Rose Fleming (32.22) and Grandview’s Elva Mattocks (32.50).
