BICKLETON – With four eighth graders and three freshmen on the team, it’s been tough sledding for the Bickleton Lady Pirates.
The BHS varsity girls basketball team, just a week or so into the new season, fell to 0-3 last night, dropping a 38-30 decision to the visiting Zillah ‘C’ squad.
As in their previous two outings, the Lady Pirates Tuesday evening did a credible job in limiting their opponents’ scoring opportunities. The problem for Bickleton, again, was in getting the ball to drop through the hoop.
Bickleton Coach Emily Barnhart said her club turned in “…another night of incredible defense,” noting the Lady Pirates were especially adept at coming up with loose balls. She singled out sophomore Heather Goodnight and junior Lindsay Brown for their strong play on the boards, saying the duo combined for 21 rebounds.
Offensively, it was a different story for Bickleton, as the Lady Pirates missed on just about everything they threw up at the hoop.
“We just couldn’t find the basket,” Barnhart said. The shooting woes were more evident in the opening half, as Bickleton scored just seven points in the first two quarters.
Trailing 19-7 at the break, the Lady Pirates caught fire a bit after intermission and outscored the visitors 23-19 to cut the final deficit to just eight points. The junior Brown and eighth grader Jayce Alexander tossed in 7 and 6 points, respectively, to lead Bickleton in the losing cause.
Barnhart said her team did a better job last night of not turning the ball over, “…but there is still work that needs to be done there.”
The Lady Pirates varsity has another non-league game scheduled this coming Saturday at home against Granger’s JV squad.
