YAKIMA – At the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic in the Yakima Valley SunDome this past Saturday, the Mabton Lady Vikings narrowly escaped defeat.
The Lady Vikes competed against White Swan and the teams ended regulation in a 49-49 tie. Mabton and the Cougars were forced into overtime, during which time the Lady Vikings were able to score three more points for a 52-49 victory.
“We knew coming in it would be a close, physical game and that’s exactly what we got,” said Mabton Coach Marty McCallum.
He said there were several lead changes with Mabton ending the opening quarter ahead 10-6.
White Swan rallied to within one point (22-21) before the intermission and Mabton was able to maintain the lead in the third quarter. The Lady Vikes ended that stanza with a score of 37-35.
In the fourth quarter the Cougars battled to outscore Mabton 14-12 to end regulation play tied.
“There were times we looked really good and times we looked a little lost,” McCallum said of Mabton.
He said the Lady Vikings remained aggressive when attacking the basket.
He said it was Cassidy McCallum and Cristina Espinoza of Mabton who were able to hold off White Swan’s Emily Botkins, keeping her to single-digit scoring.
Offensively, McCallum said Mabton has to convert many more of the easy looks, stating the Lady Vikings struggled with dropping the ball through the hoop, connecting on just 23-of-75 shots from the field.
It was Alyssa Nash who secured the victory for Mabton, scoring the final three points in overtime. She tallied a total of 15 points, which included two buckets from beyond the three-point line.
Teammate Deanay Guer-rero got a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards, and Soila Zaragoza added 13 points to the scoreboard.
Mabton beat the Cougars on the boards with 44 rebounds to White Swan’s 36.
Attempting to make up for Botkins’ inability to score were Cougars Cayla Jones and Bethany Ramsey, combining for 31 points.
Mabton this coming Tuesday will travel to Kiona-Benton.
