GRANDVIEW - Yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) at about 1 p.m. Grandview police pursued a car that failed to stop for officers, from West Fifth Street along Euclid Road into Mabton, where officers stopped the vehicle and took the driver into custody.
The driver, Omar A. Vargas-Cortez, 26, of Grandview was charged with felony eluding.
A 14-year-old male passenger attempted to flee on foot but was located a few minutes later. While fleeing, the passenger tossed something into some bushes. Officers said they recovered a handgun. The juvenile was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.
Two patrol cars sustained minor damage while stopping the fleeing vehicle.
Also yesterday afternoon, Grandview officers were called to the scene of a fight between two juvenile males who claimed to belong to rival gangs. Both suspects were charged with disorderly conduct.
Early this morning officers stopped a car and discovered a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle. The driver presented an expired medical marijuana card that police suspected was phony. The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor for charges.
Since yesterday morning, Grandview police have also investigated four reports of suspicious activity, dealt with two reports of animal problems, conducted a welfare check, responded to an automatic alarm, provided a citizen assist and took an informational call.
