YAKIMA - This past Saturday the Mabton Lady Vikings officially opened their season at the Yakima Valley SunDome. Mabton competed against White Swan in a non-league match-up and was handed a 57-45 loss.
"We started off slow, getting down 6-0," said Lady Viking Coach Chris McCallum.
He said the Lady Vikings were playing catch-up the remainder of the game.
White Swan opened the game with a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and outscored Mabton 12-10 in the second quarter.
The Lady Vikings battled to outscore White Swan 16-14 in the third stanza, but the Cougars gained the edge again, scoring 17 points to the Lady Vikes' 12 in the final quarter.
McCallum said, "I was disappointed in our rebounding effort and with our transition defense."
The Cougars were able to score 20 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds because Mabton's rebounding fell short.
"We're not a very big team, and we have to do a better job boxing out," said McCallum.
The leading scorer for the Lady Vikings was Alyssa Nash with 13 points. Teammate Veronica Vazquez scored 10 points.
"We didn't help our cause by going 10-for-30 from the foul line," McCallum said of his team's free throw shooting.
Irene Pineda of Mabton gained some notice from the coach with six points, three steals and five rebounds.
Desanay Guerrero had five defensive boards and scored seven points, while teammate Mia Herrera recorded another seven points for the Lady Vikings.
White Swan's Bethany Ramsey was the leading scorer for her team, dropping in 16 points. Teammate Emily Bat Kin scored 12 points for the Cougars.
McCallum said of Saturday's game, "The good thing is these are all things that we can get better at."
The Lady Vikings will host Ki-Be tonight (Tuesday) for another non-league match-up.
