Sunnyside High School is gearing up for its revamped homecoming week and the entire community is invited to join in on the fun.
In an effort to reach out to the community and involve a greater number of students, homecoming week will feature a variety of new activities.
Grizzlies through the Decades is the school's overall theme and alumni of Sunnyside High School are invited to help decorate the school this Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In addition to the supplies that will be provided for their use, the alumni are invited to decorate their designated area, the main entryway in the high school, with memorabilia and pictures from years past.
On Sunday, Sept. 26, the entire community is invited to tour the decorated hallways and help select a winner. To vote, the community is encouraged to bring cans of food and donate them to the class they think has the best decorated hallway. Not only will this help determine a winner for the hallway competition, but it will also help those classes win the first ever Homecoming Week Food Drive, which will support the Sunnyside Food Bank.
This Sunday is an ideal time to bring elementary and middle school students to visit the high school, so they get an introduction to the activities and traditions that will greet them upon arrival at SHS.
Homecoming week really kicks off on Monday, Sept. 27, which will feature the first ever girls dodgeball tournament between the freshman and sophomore classes. The tournament will begin at 7:30 p.m. and cost of entry is free.
Tuesday, Sept. 28, the annual Macho Man volleyball game following the girls varsity volleyball game at 7 p.m. will be held. Boys from each grade will compete and the overall winner will take on the staff to end the night. Cost to attend the Grizzly girls volleyball match is $5 with Macho Man set to begin afterward.
PowderPuff football will start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The cost of entry for this 11th and 12th grade girls football game is $2. Attendees at this SHS tradition will also get an opportunity to watch the SHS Dance Team perform to a montage of music from the film Grease.
To close out homecoming festivities the community is encouraged to cheer on the home team as the SHS Grizzlies take on the Kennewick Lions. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1.
During the game, the school will pay homage to the graduating class of 1986. The SHS Dance Team will also offer an encore of their Grease performance on Friday night during halftime.
There is something for everyone during homecoming week and the school is reaching out to the community to join the festivities as they honor the past, celebrate the present and build toward the future.
