GRANDVIEW - The winning teams at last Friday afternoon's team pull exhibition at the Yakima Valley Fair and Rodeo pulled 9,000 lbs.
The teams began with 3,000 lbs. with 500 lbs. or 1,000 lbs. being added after each team had a chance to pull.
Teams unable to pull the weight were given a second chance before being eliminated from the competition.
Competitors included owners and horses from across the Pacific Northwest, but Jordan Pace and his team of horses was the only local competitors to try their strength in the exhibition.
Captain and Gus, Pace's team, were eliminated at 4,000 lbs. while the weight climbed up to 9,000 lbs. before a winner was declared.
Winning the light weight competition was Bob McGowan of Lebanon, Oregon. His team pulled a 9,000 lb. sled a distance of 12 feet, 9 inches.
Randy Dodge and his team traveled a distance of 4 feet, 2 inches with the same weight to earn second place honors.
Dodge's team in the heavy weight category, Mike and Toby, fared better pulling the 9,000 lbs. They completed the full 20 feet to win first place honors over Bill Martzin's Jake and Bubba, who pulled the weight a distance of 13 feet, 4 inches.
Jerry Lee's team, Spud and Tater, from Boring, Oregon was awarded third place honors, pulling the 9,000 lbs. a total of 31 inches.
Though eliminated earlier in the competition, Pace's team was awarded the crowd favorite trophy.
