GRANDVIEW - Less travel for sports teams, salary freezes, reduction in hours and the elimination of non-grant funded travel are all things the Grandview School District could be facing in the 2009-10 school year.
The Grandview School District will need to cut approximately $1.6 million in anticipation of proposed budget cuts by the state.
Brad Shreeve, assistant superintendent for business and operations at the Grandview School District, told the school board at this past Monday's meeting that the district's goal in dealing with any cuts is to maintain a safe and healthy school day for students.
According to Shreeve, some of the bigger cuts the state is proposing is a $1.03 million cut in I-728 funds and a possible $317,000 cut in levy equalization funds.
To meet any budget reduction Shreeve said the district assumes three things. The district will try to keep those with continuing contracts employed and will instead reduce the work force by attrition and by not renewing the one-year contract employees.
The district is assuming that everyone will have to give something up to keep as many people employed as possible. Stimulus money will also be used to backfill where ever it is allowed.
At the end of this school year the district expects one resignation, three retirements and 2.5 retire/rehire positions to be eliminated. Because of this Shreeve told the board the district does not anticipate any further reduction in staffing.
Other cuts in the budget will come from programs such as the district's contracted services. A salary freeze for district administrators will go into effect. Athletics will be looked at. For instance, long trips outside of the region will be scrutinized.
Other cuts could include the district's music budget, non-grant funded travel and the reduction of building budgets.
Shreeve warned the board that the proposed cuts for the 2009-10 school year look bad but the scenario for 2010-11 is downright ugly.
Because of this, he said, it is important for the district to maintain a healthy reserve.
