SPOKANE - The results may not have been all that Sunnyside's volleyball team hoped for, but last weekend's Cross Over tourney at Spokane gave the Lady Grizzlies plenty of experience.
"It was a chance to get a lot of girls playing time," Coach Angel Carrizales said of the tourney. Sunnyside won two of 12 mini-matches (first to 15, best of three) over the weekend, including victories over Goldendale and Clarkston.
Not only were the non-counting contests an opportunity to get ready for key league matches this week, but Sunnyside may have found another team leader in the process.
"Kerri Urrutia played well over the weekend," observed Carrizales. "I think she's somebody that has a new focus on volleyball and one of our leaders going into Prosser."
Carrizales also praised the play of Christy Linde and the grit of Claire Schilperoort, who played on in the tourney despite a jammed thumb. "I think it's commendable that she toughed it out," the coach said.
Speaking of Prosser, the Mustangs come to town tomorrow, Tuesday, for a Mid-Valley League match with possible playoff implications.
"If we can beat Prosser then it gives us hope for a playoff berth," Carrizales said of the Lady Grizzlies (1-8, 3-12).
