FEDERAL WAY - Sunnyside Christian High School sophomore Patrick Elerding is the 1A/2A/3A State champion in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Elerding competed at the WIAA State swim meet this past weekend at the King County Aquatic Facility in Federal Way.
In the preliminaries last Friday, Elerding placed second in the 100-breast with a clocking of 58.29 seconds. He finished behind David Blasco, a junior from Timberline High School.
In the finals on Saturday, Elerding got off to a strong start, but was still just over a tenth of a second behind Russ Mahan of Sammamish at the 50-yard mark. Elerding poured it on, though, coming from behind to take the lead at the final turn and held off a challenge by Mahan to win by six one-hundredth's of a second.
Elerding's time in the preliminaries and finals were automatic All-American qualifying times.
In the second event in which Elerding competed at State, the 100-butterfly, he earned a fourth place finish.
He clocked a 52.33 in the preliminaries. In the 100-butterfly finals, Elerding was in second place at the halfway point, but cramped up and settled for fourth place honors. Despite cramping up, Elerding clocked a 52.19.
In looking ahead, Elerding plans on swimming in the National Junior Championships in Orlando, Fla. the end of March.
